Sony BDP-S350 Dvd

Any way you look at it, the Sony BDP-S350 is an excellent Blu-ray player. It's well designed and easy to use. It supports high-end Blu-ray features such as BD-Live. And it produces good-looking images.
The judges in our PC World Test Center evaluation graded the BDP-S350 with a mixture of Good and Very Good scores, with the Very Goods seeing a slight edge.
Of all the judges, I was the most pleased with this player. When it upconverted DVDs to 1080p, I thought it provided better color than the Sony PlayStation 3 did. I wasn't quite so impressed with how it handled colors from Blu-ray discs, feeling they were duller compared with what I saw from the PS3 in The Searchers and Mission: Impossible III, and just a tad off in Cars. I thought the BDP-S350 gave better gray and black detail in Good Night and Good Luck, where there was no color at all.
But another judge disagreed, saying that Good Night lost some of the detail in the blacks, and that the reds and greens were a bit off in Cars. Even so, I have to say that the images were pleasing overall; if you don't have another player side-by-side with it as we had, you're unlikely to notice these things.

Samsung BD-P2500

When you first turn on the Samsung BD-P2500, you see a low-resolution, jagged Samsung logo. That's pretty disappointing for a $375 Blu-ray player (price as of 12/12/08). Fortunately, with one exception noted below, it's the last disappointing thing you'll see on this player.
Our PC World Test Center judges found the Samsung's image quality simply amazing--better than any other Blu-ray player we've seen recently. The grades we gave it contained a few Goods, many Very Goods, and a lot of Superiors--unusual for our discriminating judges.
Day-for-night sequences--shot during the day but processed to look like night--are especially hard to resolve digitally. The scene must look dark, but with faces and other details still visible. Our tests contain two such scenes, on the Return of the King DVD and The Searchers Blu-ray. I noted more detail in both of them, without loss of darkness, on the Samsung, than I typically spy during these tests.
Another judge observed that the Samsung output terrific, brilliant colors on our Phantom of the Opera Blu-ray test, and that film grain looked like film grain on Good Night and Good Luck.
The BD-P2500 is one of two Blu-ray players we've tested that can stream video via the Internet directly from Netflix. (The other is the LG BD300. A third such player, Samsung's BD-P2550, is a Best Buy-only version of the BD-P2500.) The functionality here is virtually identical to that of the Roku Netflix Player and the LG BD300: Armed with an ethernet connection and a Netflix account, you use a PC to queue up 480p and 720p video streams; those streams are then available to you via the Netflix option on the player.
The BD-P2500 also supports BD-Live for accessing supplemental disc content via the Web. This feature requires an ethernet connection as well as your own USB drive. Regrettably, this model's USB port is inconveniently situated in the back, and it supports only BD-Live, not your own media files. Another point to grumble about: The BD-P2500 natively supports Dolby TrueHD (so your your amplifier doesn't have to) but not DTS-HD Master Audio. That's a surprising shortcoming for such a feature-laden, expensive player.

Sharp BD-HP21U DVD

The Sharp BD-HP21U packs lots of metal--literally. It's large and heavy, so much so that you could mistake it for an old Laserdisc player. This model carries a moderate price ($280 as of 12/12/08), but that gets you only a Blu-ray player with hit-and-miss image quality.
When you grab a disc off the shelf to play on the BD-HP21U, grab a book, as well: It takes an agonizing 2.5 minutes to load a typical Blu-ray disc--more than twice as long as any other player we've ever tested. On the other hand, once you have the disc playing, the player responds to the remote control as well as any.
And what do you see during playback? Our PC World Test Center judges found extremes of good and bad in viewing our suite of test discs. On our tests of both The Phantom of the Opera and The Searchers in Blu-ray, I noted that the Sharp wasn't, well, sharp. The Phantom DVD didn't look too good, either--another judge noted that its images appeared dull and flat. She also found the faces too red in The Searchers.
On the other hand, the player did very well on our Mission: Impossible III and Good Night and Good Luck tests. The latter showed notably good contrast, according to one judge.
Though I found this player easy to use, it does have some drawbacks that caught my attention. The small, programmable remote control fit comfortably in my hand, and the important buttons were all easy to get to (one of the advantages of a small remote). Unfortunately, though, the remote lacks a backlight.
